Dental Temping – What are the expectations in the eyes of the Dental Hygienist, Dental Assistant and Dental Office?
On March 22 2021, Fiona Mattrasingh, a Registered Dental Hygienist (@mouthboxx on Instagram) and our very own James Younger, DDS Founder/CEO, TempStars had an Instagram Live Stream to discuss the expectations of temping shifts from both sides; the Dental Hygienists/Dental Assistant and the Dental Office.
The interview begins with James discussing the story behind TempStars and Fiona giving a brief background about her experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist, Clinical Instructor, and a Speaker at speaking engagements related to infection control and transitioning dental professionals from Hygiene school to a dental office setting.
Temping – What is it? Why do it?
After that Fiona and James jump into discussing how temping shifts can be successfully completed on both sides. Fiona kicks off the discussion with the question, “Why temp? What is the benefit of temping?” James points out that there are many reasons why people pick up temping shifts, but one of the key reasons is because people want to work a more flexible, professionally empowered life. In addition, James discusses the reality of how hourly temping rates end up being higher than the overall hired rates.
How is TempStars handling COVID and PPE
As the conversation unfolds, Fiona and James chat about how Dental Offices should clearly outline what the role will entail when posting shifts. In addition, they touch upon the expectations under the COVID circumstances and both Fiona and James agree that both sides are responsible for being familiar with the mandated dentistry guidelines.
From the TempStars side, James shares how the TempStars system allows Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants that are looking at a temping shift to know what PPE equipment the Dental Office has available. When posting a temping shift, Dental Offices are responsible for including what PPE equipment they have available and what PPE equipment they expect the Dental Hygienist or Dental Assistant to bring in. More information about how TempStars is addressing COVID-19 can be found here.
Overall, it is suggested that there needs to be a nice balance between what is reasonable for a Dental Office to expect and what a Dental Hygienist or Dental Assistant should expect for temping shifts.
