As many of you may know, I still regularly practice clinical dentistry. This may seem really strange, given that being the chief executive of TempStars is a full-time, exciting and rewarding position. I manage a team of nearly a dozen employees and contractors. And I am very much a hands-on leader, who gets into the weeds of running a business when necessary.
So why do it? That question was recently posed to me in an interview on a podcast. Here is what I told the host.
It is important to me for a few reasons.
Reason #1 – I enjoy practicing dentistry and working with many patients
First, it is not something that I am doing to supplement my income or anything like that. It is more that I just love doing dentistry. For example, I am still taking continuing education courses and all the other clinical stuff. I also love working with the patients and having the time to provide them with the quality care that they need. In short, I always wanted to be a clinical dentist. This is the fulfillment of a dream.
Reason #2 – Having a presence in the industry helps me better understand how I can help other Dental Professionals
Second, it really helps me to continue to understand my colleagues who are also still practicing dentistry. That applies on the clinical side, where they are focused on providing the best possible care to their patients. But it also applies on the business side. I have owned two dental practices, which has afforded me with a lot of experience when it comes to the ins and outs of running an office from an operational standpoint, the business realities a dental office faces, and all the other things that come with owning and operating a dental practice.
Reason #3 – It is an ongoing learning process; nothing is ever completely finished
Third, it provides an important break from being the chief executive at TempStars, where I can reflect and learn. I have a two-hour drive each way to my dental office, and I love listening to books on tape. By the way, here is a little tip – I listen to them at one and a half speed. So, in four hours of driving, I get six hours of books on tape in. And I have got my Siri listening in the passenger seat, so I am listening to a book on tape and then I say, “Hey, Siri, make a note.” Then she makes a note. Then when I get to the office or I get home, I have got these notes from listening to these. Then I start to sketch them out and things like that. It is really helpful to have that time in the car and really get into that focus of listening and learning.
For all of those reasons, I just really love continuing to practice dentistry and will continue to do so well into the future.
